How a repair disappears
Small holes are filled and covered with mesh or a patch. Larger holes are cut back to a clean square, backed and filled with a new piece of drywall. Then the repair gets the same treatment as a new seam: tape where it is needed, several thin coats of mud feathered well past the edges, and sanding until the patch is flat with the wall around it. Matching the existing texture and priming before paint keeps the repair from showing as a dull or shiny spot.
Water damage
Water-damaged drywall is not something to paint over. Once the source of the leak is fixed, the damaged board is cut out, the framing is checked and allowed to dry, and new drywall is hung, finished and painted to match.
